those of you who are red-eyed this morning. you may want to put the shades on. we'll have a little sunshine mixed in with the clouds. we're still an hour away from sunrise or at least an hour and a half with the chill this morning in the 50s and low 60s. we warm up nicely this afternoon. then we'll talk about igor, still a category 4 and now sister julia, hurricane julia, renamed and upgraded earlier this morning. yesterday, we've got our time lapse imagery across baltimore. you can see we had a mix of clouds thrown into the sky but this morning 67 at oriole park camden yards. that is one of the warmest spots we can find. most of you start in the 50s. ellicott city 54. 58 degrees in perry hall and 57 bel air and northeast. follow the our wake-up window at the bottom of the screen. you'll see a nice weather pattern the next couple of days. hopefully we have nice traffic to talk about. let's toss to it kim brown. we have good traffic to piggyback on the good weather. no accidents or incidents right

is generally on the social issues. >> reporter: in democrat-dominated delaware gop leaders think eight-time congressman mike castle is the only hope to win biden's old senate seat. instead he's in a tight race with christine o'donnell. she's lost senate bids twice before. this time she has tea party backing. >> the republican party lost its way. they get behind candidates like my opponent who don't even support the republican platform. who continue to support the democrat agenda. >> this is governor sarah palin. vote for christine o'donnell for u.s. senate. >> reporter: sarah palin recorded calls for o'donnell and candidates in two other states today. the tea party could also factor into new york's republican race for governor with its pick of carl palladino. >> we're coming to the end of a few months of very hard work. >> reporter: he's in a dead heat with former congressman rick lazio. >> i'm a candidate that will bring people together. that will unify people. >> reporter: the winner will face democrat andrew cuomo.

also, congressman charlie rangel has spent 20 times more money than the next closest candidate but also facing a looming ethics trial. >> thank you for everything. >> reporter: a tea party favorite is also making for a tight race in new hampshire's senate contest. tea party favorites have already won senate primaries in six states this year. emily schmidt, abc news, washington. 5:34 now. as in nearly every election it's hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to campaign ads and things you receive in the mail. some viewers tell us they receive misleading ballots in the mail. the university of maryland law school dean mark graber says those mailings and other political speech is protected by the first amendment and it's up to the voter to decide the truth. most political rhetoric is aimed at a small and increasingly smaller middle. these people are more persuadable in part because they generally are ambivalent

and in part because it turns out in many cases the middle, or the so-called middle is in fact composed of people who are less tuned in to politics. >> he says our society is so politically polarized it's hard to change peoples' minds once they are made up. the trial for the man accused of killing former city councilman ken harris expected to take almost a month to finish. yesterday monica foreman-robinson harris took the stand. the only person known to have seen harris's death. she said she saw someone in a halloween mask shouting at harris before he got into his car. she then said harris was shot as he tried to drive away. the state claims suspect jerome williams' dna ties him to the mask. the attorney disputes the claim. >> no one can identify the three individuals. as i indicated in my opening this is a high profile case. and my suspicion is the police

80s after the chilly start, the cloudy start and even the foggy start for some of you. keep that in mind because that is fairly typical autumn weather around here even though it's not quite autumn yet. 81 baltimore. 83 york. in hagerstown they really heated up versus the 77 on the eastern shore in easton. still a beautiful afternoon there. they started at 59 in easton. 58 in baltimore. and low 50s outside the beltway and up north towards york, pennsylvania. most of us dealing with a quiet scene. on maryland's most powerful doppler radar and five sweeps through the chesapeake showing up a quiet uneventful start to the day. 50s, go to the 2-degree guaranteed high of 80 and sunny this afternoon. kim brown has traffic >> two words to describe traffic. all good. we don't have problems on the roads so far and no delays as well. as we look at the drive times. on 795, you won't encounter problems between route 140 and franklin boulevard. it's 10 minutes, a little less as you make your way towards

she will be meeting and greeting voters throughout the stay. city -- the city. jessamy is fighting to hold on to her 15 years as baltimore's top prosecutor. on monday she was endorsed by a group of baptist ministers. bernstein had an endorsement from billy murphy, an attorney and well known judge in the city. the focus here is on baltimore is -- on baltimore's high crime rate and who will make the city safer. in baltimore, linda so, abc2 news. bartonfelder against kaminetz. sherrie johnson with more on this hot race. >> reporter: we have a big political battle for the democratic nod for baltimore county executive. they will square off during primary voting. both are fourth-term councilman. kaminetz has been accused of an

ugly mud-slinging campaign while bartonfelder chose a positive campaign. he says he chooses to focus ops his 28 -- on his 28-year accomplishment. >> we have a great county. it's fiscally well managed but we have challenging times. i think when times are going well we tend to keep doing things the same way. now that we're facing difficult times i'm looking forward to the opportunity of rethinking how do we do things? and, can we start to do more with less? >> the only reason i'm running is because i want to work for the people in baltimore county to do a good job for them, to keep our government moving forward in a positive way. >> reporter: the state elections administration in annapolis estimates 32% of eligible voters will turn out to vote in the primary. the nice weather and hot races like baltimore county executive is speck to draw voters to the -- expected to draw votes to the polls today. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. news time 5:48.

hurricane status. 75 mile-per-hour winds, near the coast of africa. probably not going to get as strong as igor which is down to 135 mile-per-hour winds. still a category 4 storm and still expected to move its way on in through the western atlantic which crites almost directly towards bermuda, as it should weaken to a category 2 by that point, that should be this weekend. large swells pushing to the caribbean islands. and will be impacting the east coast of the u.s. as we head towards the end of the week and into the weekend. we expect nice weather here by that point in time which means people may be heading to the beaches and have to deal with the hard swells. even though it's after labor day warmest water temperatures on the east coast right now, prime time to get down there with less crowds to the beaches we could have beach weather here. 58 this morning. it's rather chilly. chilly for those of you that have a backyard pool, seems to be cooling off quickly, because of the clear to partly cloudy skies we've had overnight. this band of clouds coming from

thank you for joining us. making news around the nation, dramatic video of a car crash. the whole thing caught on tape in california. police say a suspected drunk driver hit a bicyclist. illegally crossing the highway. the suv then smashed into a vw bug parked in front of a liquor store. the consider was then shoved into a building. the clerk was cut with a piece of glass and taken to the hospital for stitches. authorities say the bicyclist sadly died at the scene. dramatic home video of last week's deadly gas main explosion in san bruno, california. a man took these incredible pictures ripping through his neighborhood just after the explosion. the footage was taken from a house balcony just behind the pipe. investigators still have no cause for this explosion yet. we'll be right back.
